Robert Devriendt: 'Art cultivates and exploits the differences between the human on the one hand, and the natural and animal on the other, while simultaneously confirming these. Painting is "feeling" the surface of things. Various recollections and associations are stored in the layer of paint. Painting also involves a non depiction: it involves being aware of the fact that a complex subject matter cannot simply and plainly be recorded on the canvas, that one depends on the public, on the context, on the presupposed recognition of the subject matter, on shared memories and dreams.'
