The bed - title of the film that is also referred to as a Czech porn tragedy - is the place where the most important events of the story take place: our hero was procreated, born and will die in a bed and during his life he often hides in bed, rests in bed, dreams there and lives there. The protagonist Lubosh (40) is a very ordinary gym teacher. The story starts when he is on the point of death. He sees his life flash before his eyes as in a post-mortal narrative: his mother Vera, his grandma, his wife Olga, his two daughters, his girlfriends... he mainly sees women. Women who surround him, caress him but are eventually also the noose around his neck. Lubosh is not characterised by self-pity, on the contrary: in a sober way he leads the viewer through his bizarre life and comments on the most incredible situations with a dry rationalism. This colourful description of both real and imaginary experiences slowly reveals Lubosh' life story: an absurd grotesque with a very unexpected ending. On the boundary between life and death, Lubosh comes to a realisation that will shock both him and the viewer. The beautiful black & white camera work is by Igor Luther, well known for his work with Wajda, Robbe-Grillet and Schlöndorf, especially his Die Blechtrommel.
