An exciting and beautifully stylised chamber play about lying the truth. The little rich kid John Walter Wayland (a strong role by Tim Roth) is accused of murdering the beautiful and exclusive prostitute Elizabeth. The woman has been murdered in a savage way; her mutilated body has been found spread across a city park. Apart from flashbacks, dreams and fantasies, the action is mainly restricted to the interrogation room of a police station. Wayland is linked up to a lie-detector and interrogated by detectives Braxton and Kennesaw. Kennesaw is an experienced, heartless and keen interrogator, but Wayland turns out to be a formidable opponent. Thanks to his money and influence, he knows more about his interrogates than they know about him. He manages to turn the tables. Braxton has gambling debts that mean he can be blackmailed and the hard Kennesaw turns out to be a frustrated and perverted man who himself had once mistreated the whore in question, Elizabeth. Wayland plays a clever and a mean game and in the end it is unclear who did it. It is however clear that a savage killer remains on the loose.Striking in this film by the young twins Jonas and Josh Pate is the setting of the cruel fantasies of the protagonists. For instance we see Wayland murder his mother in his thoughts and Kennesaw imagine how he could be rid of his beautiful and adulterous wife. (GjZ)
