Eddie Manley, an eight year-old African American child escapes from his Brooklyn orphanage. He follows Sammy, an urban fisherman into Hellhole, a deserted factory on the East River. Entering Hellhole, Eddie accidentally wakes John, the most influential character of the commune. John passes the responsibility of Eddie to Kathy, a heroin addict and prostitute who lost the custody of her own son to the family courts. When Kathy's roommate dies of an overdose, Eddie takes her place and sleeps in a tiny room with Kathy. Forced to live together, Eddie and Kathy develop a friendship. The abusive lifestyle of these characters eventually deteriorates the commune. Eddie gets caught shoplifting and the police return him to his orphanage.Writer, producer and director Weinstein has made an impressive feature début with Under the Bridge. This heartwarming film follows the stories of those who have passionately rejected the mainstream. A narrative film with documentary like elements, Under the Bridge creates lyrical realism on film.
