When fifteen-year-old Florence's father is arrested by the Rhodesian police, the shocked girl persuades her scholarly girlfriend Nyasha to go with her to a guerilla camp in Mozambique. After a dangerous journey through the war-torn country, a hard life awaits them in the camp. The girls are confronted with violence, hunger, rape, pregnancy and the loss of dear ones. The only thing that Florence, dubbed Flame in the camp, still has left is war. She grows into a legendary freedom fighter. Years later, when Rhodesia has long been known as Zimbabwe, Nyasha has a good job in the city, but Flame's marriage has lots of problems. It is time for a new freedom struggle - for woman's independence. The production of Flame was plagued by protests from the Association of (male) War Veterans, but with great perseverance, Ingrid Sinclair managed to make her homage to the fighting women of Zimbabwe.
