The Movies. And Us, Ali Khamraev en Yuri Klimenko&#8217;s eerbetoon aan Sergei Parajanov\u2019s The Lilac Wind of Paradjanov en Mousso Fariman, de terugkeer van Drissa Tour\u00e9 als regisseur.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rotterdam &#8211; 9 januari 2025 &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) heeft het Cinema Regained-programma voor de editie van 2025 bekendgemaakt: een geheel van gedeelde filmgeschiedenis en verbeelding. Via maar liefst 43 werken wordt het publiek&nbsp; getrakteerd op gerestaureerde klassiekers, prikkelende documentaires over filmcultuur en boeiende verkenningen van het cinematografische erfgoed. Het programma richt zich zowel op recent cinematografisch werk als op de filmgeschiedenis, met een selectie van restauraties voor 1970.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Olaf M\u00f6ller, programmeur van Cinema Regained<\/strong>: &#8220;IFFR is altijd op zoek naar vernieuwing, maar vergeet nooit om ook terug te kijken. Zo slaat Cinema Regained dit jaar een belangrijke brug tussen heden en verleden. Het programma brengt het publiek opnieuw in contact met vergeten filmverhalen: een nieuw hoofdstuk van het verhaal dat we al langer in Rotterdam vertellen. Het biedt de ruimte om dieper in te gaan op bijzonderheden en vormt de verbinding voor het bredere festival. Diverse verhalen die een aanvulling zijn op onze Focus-programma&#8217;s komen samen. Het is een kans om stil te staan bij de culturele en politieke erfenis van film door de tijd heen en je te verbazen over enkele van de grootste filmmakers ooit, zowel gevierde als vergeten helden. Dat is prachtig om te zien!&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Hoogtepunten van Cinema Regained&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De selectie van Cinema Regained voor 2025 richt de aandacht op zowel gevierde als vergeten filmmakers die hebben bijgedragen aan de filmgeschiedenis. Na een pauze van 30 jaar maakt regisseur Drissa Tour\u00e9 uit Burkina Faso zijn rentree met&nbsp;<strong>Mousso Fariman<\/strong>, die hij samen regisseerde met St\u00e9phane Mbanga. De film, die in Rotterdam zijn wereldpremi\u00e8re beleeft, behandelt de tegenstrijdigheden in de samenleving van Burkina Faso, waarbij de focus ligt op de veerkracht van vrouwen in het dagelijks leven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het oeuvre van Sergei Parajanov wordt ge\u00eberd met de wereldpremi\u00e8re van&nbsp;<strong>The Lilac Wind of Paradjanov<\/strong>, 37 jaar na zijn eerste internationale bezoek aan het festival. Filmmaker Ali Khamraev dook samen met cameraman Yuri Klimenko in de archieven. Het tweetal reisde naar Armeni\u00eb en Georgi\u00eb om Sergei Parajanov te eren. Hij was een van de grootste filmmakers van de 20ste eeuw die grenzen verlegde met zijn visie en zich verzette tegen tradities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IFFR toonde in 1988&nbsp;<strong>The Jester&nbsp;<\/strong>van Jos\u00e9 \u00c1lvaro Morais. De film keert terug in een gerestaureerde versie, waarin theater en film versmelten in een po\u00ebtische bewerking van Alexandre Herculano&#8217;s roman uit 1842 over de Portugese onafhankelijkheid. De Thaise cinema staat centraal met Khom Akadets&nbsp;<strong>I Am with a Monk<\/strong>, een aangrijpend verhaal over overleven en verlossing met de Thaise filmiconen Sombat Methanee en Sorapong Chatree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twee keer eerder bracht Cinema Regained de documentaireserie&nbsp;<strong>Modern Korea&nbsp;<\/strong>naar Rotterdam. Deze tv-serie van de Koreaanse publieke omroep KBS biedt een kritische kijk op de geschiedenis van het land door de lens van de eigen KBS-producties. Het nieuwste deel&nbsp;<strong>Korean Dream: The Nama-jinheung Mixtape<\/strong>&nbsp;beleeft zijn internationale premi\u00e8re op IFFR. Filmmaker Lee Taewoong bouwde deze reflectieve documentaire op uit filmfragmenten van de inmiddels verdwenen Nama-jinheung studio en schept zo een beeld van het innerlijke landschap van Koreanen tijdens de Koude Oorlog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaste IFFR-gast Khavn maakte met de wereldpremi\u00e8re&nbsp;<strong>Bomba Bernal&nbsp;<\/strong>een AI-gedreven eerbetoon aan het Filippijnse bomba genre. Saeed Nouri is een andere festivalfavoriet die met<strong>&nbsp;Tehran, An Unfinished History&nbsp;<\/strong>de onbekende geschiedenis van de Iraanse cinema voor 1979 presenteert. Ondertussen keert ook Sami van Ingen terug met&nbsp;<strong>Cast of Shadows<\/strong>. Dit intieme essay, opgebouwd uit archiefmateriaal, ontrafelt de verhalen van de vrouwen achter de nalatenschap van Robert Flaherty. Het is een van de vele titels in het programma dit jaar die vrouwen in het middelpunt van de filmgeschiedenis plaatsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Net als in eerdere edities staan vrouwen centraal in het programma van Cinema Regained. De Indiase filmmaker Sai Paranjpye voegt met&nbsp;<strong>Katha&nbsp;<\/strong>humor en charme toe aan de klassieke fabel van de haas en de schildpad. Ook gaat&nbsp;<strong>Cinema Pe Cinema: The Theatres. The Movies. And Us<\/strong>&nbsp;van Vani Subramanian in wereldpremi\u00e8re. De film onderzoekt de erfenis van de Indiase bioscopen met \u00e9\u00e9n filmzaal en verweeft de herinneringen aan deze theaters met de maatschappelijke en politieke veranderingen in het land van de afgelopen eeuw.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De uit Gujarati (West-India) afkomstige filmmaker Chetna Vora wordt ge\u00eberd met de vertoning van haar eerste film&nbsp;<strong>Oyoyo<\/strong>, een onderzoek naar het leven van buitenlandse studenten in de Duitse Democratische Republiek. Daar studeerde ze film, en onderzocht ze thema&#8217;s als culturele identiteit, muziek en gemeenschap. Haar tweede film&nbsp;<strong>Frauen in Berlin<\/strong>&nbsp;is een verzameling verhalen en indrukken vanuit het vrouwelijke perspectief en te zien in het programma Focus: Hold Video in Your Hands dat bewaard is gebleven op VHS. Christiane B\u00fcchners&nbsp;<strong>Erz\u00e4hlungen eines Kinogehers<\/strong>&nbsp;schetst een portret van de liefde voor de film, middels gesprekken met Werner D\u00fctsch die een voorloper was van Duitse televisie bij de filmcultuur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het programma geeft ook veel ruimte aan historische verhalen die vaak onverteld blijven. Met de wereldpremi\u00e8re van Hafiz Rancajale&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Bachtiar&nbsp;<\/strong>wordt de weggemoffelde nalatenschap van de Indonesische filmmaker Bachtiar Siagian nieuw leven ingeblazen. Siagans carri\u00e8re werd afgebroken tijdens de anticommunistische zuivering van 1965, waarna het merendeel van zijn werk onder het regime van Soeharto werd vernietigd of verwaarloosd raakte. Deze film biedt een krachtig tegengeluid en stelt het vertekende beeld van zijn nalatenschap in de offici\u00eble geschiedschrijving ter discussie. Bachtiars meesterwerk&nbsp;<strong>Turang<\/strong>&nbsp;(1957), dat onlangs werd herontdekt, wordt vertoond in Focus: Through Cinema We Shall Rise!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het Cinema Regained-programma belicht ook een aantal werken voor 1970. Stuk voor stuk bieden ze unieke vertelperspectieven. Naast het retrospectief van de Oekra\u00efense filmmaker in Focus: Sergii Masloboishchykov, verdiept Cinema Regained de context met een verkenning van de Oekra\u00efense ballingschapscinema in de VS van de jaren 30.&nbsp;<strong>Cossacks in Exile&nbsp;<\/strong>(1939), de tweede en laatste samenwerking tussen filmmaker Edgar Georg Ulmer en danser-choreograaf Vasil\u02b9 Avramenko, vertelt het verhaal van Oekra\u00efners die weigeren zich te onderwerpen aan de Russische autoriteiten en uit hun land worden verdreven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There&#8217;s a Fire Burning<\/strong>&nbsp;(1943) van Gustaf Molander vertelt een liefdesverhaal om zo de spanningen in oorlogstijd te verkennen. De film werd onlangs ge\u00eberd met een retrospectief in Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna. Tengiz Abuladze presenteert in&nbsp;<strong>Someone Else&#8217;s Children&nbsp;<\/strong>(1958) een teder verhaal van een broer en zus op zoek naar een moederfiguur, terwijl<strong>&nbsp;Kaja<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>I&#8217;ll Kill You!<\/strong>&nbsp;(1967) van Vatroslav Mimicazich opvalt als een gedurfde, gefragmenteerde verkenning van onderdrukking, waarin po\u00ebtische verhalen zich vermengen met opvallende experimenten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<strong>Todo parec\u00eda posible<\/strong>&nbsp;van Ram\u00f3n Rivera Moret staan culturele identiteit en de gemeenschapszin van de filmwereld centraal. De film bekijkt het utopische moment van Puerto Rico door een andere lens: die van de makers van plattelandsfilms in de jaren 50 en 60. IFFR presenteert een toonaangevend internationaal filmfestival en een programma dat het hele jaar door de waardering voor film in al zijn vormen verdiept. Ook is IFFR actief bezig met het ondersteunen van nieuw en avontuurlijk filmtalent middels de coproductiemarkt CineMart, het Hubert Bals Fonds, Rotterdam Lab en andere activiteiten voor professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/press.iffr.com\/#\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IFFR wil de kijk van mensen op de wereld en op elkaar verruimen, verrijken en uitdagen door middel van film en audiovisuele kunst.
