In 2023 publiceerde IFFR het eerste boek over deze auteur wiens werken en wijsheid op de dag van vandaag meer dan ooit nodig zijn. Even during a time where greater attention is finally paid to female filmmakers, her name is rarely mentioned. Elek, as I learnt, is not unhappy about this \u2013 if anything she feels limited when discussed only as a \u2018woman filmmaker\u2019 or \u2018feminist director\u2019. Of course she is&nbsp; deeply invested in the question of women\u2019s place in society \u2013 from her work it is obvious; this is, however, most emphatically not all Elek\u2019s cinema is concerned with. To present Elek as a feminist filmmaker is to force her to a corner. And if there is one thing she has tried to escape all her life, then it is certainly cosy corners and facile labels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere are many aspects to Elek\u2019s art that are desperately needed now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent times IFFR has honoured directors whenever they have a new work. But Elek\u2019s cinema made me consider that perhaps the films we need the most at a given moment in time are not always current, instead arriving out of the past in our days. There are many aspects to Elek\u2019s art that are desperately needed now: In a time of growing antisemitism, films like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/memories-of-a-river\"><strong>Memories of a River\/&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>Tutajosok<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>or<em>&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/a-free-man-%E2%80%93-the-life-of-ern%C5%91-fisch\"><strong>A Free Man<\/strong><em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<\/em><strong>The Life of Ern\u0151 Fisch&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>\/ Egy szabad ember \u2013 Fisch Ern\u0151 \u00e9lete&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/a>help us understand the historical and societal roots of this sinister ideology. In a period of widespread paranoia and belief in the obscure powers of the invisible forces, it is again&nbsp;<strong>Memories of a River<\/strong>, but above all&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/the-trial-of-martinovics-and-the-hungarian-jacobins\"><strong>The Trial of Martinovics and the Hungarian Jacobins \/<\/strong><strong><em>&nbsp;Vizsg\u00e1lat Martinovics Ign\u00e1c sz\u00e1szv\u00e1ri ap\u00e1t \u00e9s t\u00e1rsai \u00fcgy\u00e9ben<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>that shows us how facts are distorted, conspiracies fabricated and dissent sown in their name. In an era of progressive streamlining of the ways we are supposed to love and live, the protagonists of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/maybe-tomorrow\"><strong>Maybe Tomorrow\/&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>Majd holnap<\/em><\/strong><em>,<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/marias-day\"><strong>Maria\u2019s Day \/&nbsp;<em>M\u00e1ria-nap<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/iffr\/2023\/films\/awakening\"><strong>Awakening \/&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><em>\u00c9bred\u00e9s<\/em><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;remind us how complicated emotions are, how contradictory human beings can be, and how much patience and tolerance we must have with one another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would like to thank the team who realised this monumental project, the retrospective and monograph alike. I would also like to thank the Hungarian Film Archive for their previous and generous support.
