Ruy Guerra

Ruy GUERRA (1931, Mozambique) is a Portuguese-Brazilian screenwriter and filmmaker. He graduated in filmmaking from L'Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris and began working as an assistant filmmaker in several French film productions. In 1958, he emigrated to Brazil where he made his first feature film Os Cafajestes (1962). He was the first filmmaker from the Cinema Novo group to film outside Brazil (in France, in 1968). He adapted many works of Gabriel García Márquez, with whom he became friends in 1972. His films have been screened at various film festivals worldwide, including Berlin International Film Festival and Moscow International Film Festival. He has been nominated for and won many awards, including the Golden Palm at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival and the Silver Bear Grand Jury Award at the 14th and 28th Berlin International Film Festival.
