Kiro Russo

Kiro RUSSO (b. 1984, Bolivia) studied directing at the Universidad del Cine (FUC) in Buenos Aires and is a director, screenwriter and editor. He made three short films, Enterprisse (2010), Juku (2012) and Nueva vida/New Life (2015) before his debut feature Viejo calavera/Dark Skull (2016). This film was selected for more than 80 festivals and won 23 awards, including the Special Mention of the Jury at the Locarno Film Festival. Russo's second feature film, El gran movimiento/The Grand Movement (2021), was shot in the town he was born in, La Paz. The film premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Orizzonti Special Jury Award. Russo blends documentary elements with fictional narrative, drawing inspiration from French director Robert Bresson. Since its launch in Venice, El gran movimiento has been invited to 20 festivals among which San Sebastian, NYFF and IFFR, and has already won 10 awards.

Kiro's new project, entitled Lost Songs of Distant Realms, is currently in development, aiming to shoot in Bolivia in 2023.
