Jane Campion (1954, New Zealand) graduated in Anthropology from Wellington University and in Painting from Sydney College of Arts before enrolling in the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Her early short Peel: An Exercise in Discipline (1982) won the Short Film Palme d’Or. She directed her feature film debut, Sweetie, in 1989. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or and won the AFI Award for Best Screenplay. Her second feature, An Angel at My Table (1990), gained her further recognition and won her the Grand Special Jury Prize in Venice. In 1993 she directed The Piano and became the first and only female director to win the Palme d’Or. On top of that, she received several Golden Globes and BAFTA nominations, and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. After Bright Star (2009), which was nominated for the Palme d’Or, she turned her attention to television. Together with Gerard Lee she wrote the series Top of the Lake, directing several episodes of its two seasons, which aired in 2013 and 2017. The series received widespread acclaim, including three Emmy nominations.
