Jacques Rivette

Still: Merry-Go-Round
Jacques RIVETTE (1928–2016, France) was a filmmaker and film critic, mostly associated with the French New Wave and the film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. He worked as an assistant director with Jean Renoir and as an editor and cinematographer with Eric Rohmer and François Truffaut before making his own first feature, Paris nous appartient (1960). It was awarded the prestigious Sutherland Trophy and it made him one of the most uncompromising directors in the French New Wave overnight. Thirty years later, he won the Grand Prix at Cannes with the hypnotic masterpiece La belle noiseuse (1991). His work is noted for its improvisation, loose narratives and lengthy running times. Rivette’s career spanned over half a century, and he mastered almost every aspect of filmmaking.
