ITAMI Juzo (1933–1997, Japan) was a filmmaker, screenwriter and actor. He worked as a commercial designer, television reporter, magazine editor and essayist before turning to acting around 1960. His acting career would span almost three decades, with roles in many Japanese films as well as big-budget foreign-language films 55 Days at Peking (1955) and Lord Jim (1964). His directorial debut came at the age of 50 with The Funeral (1984), which won many awards, including Japanese Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. His second feature, the ‘ramen western’ Tampopo (1985), would become a cult classic.
