György Szomjas (1940, Budapest) studied architecture, theatre and film in Budapest. In 1968 he embarked on a cooperation with the Béla Balász film studio, both culturally and politically the most prominent studio in Hungary. His first full-length feature, The Wind is Whistling Under Their Feet (1976), was a western set on the pusta, with many allusions to Sergio Leone, Sam Peckinpah and Akira Kurosawa.
