Gessica Généus
Still: FredaGessica GÉNÉUS (1985, Haiti) is an actor, director and writer. She has collaborated with various Haitian and international film directors, including Raoul Peck, Philippe Niang and Kareem Mortimer. In 2002, Géneus started her acting career with the feature film Barikad, for which she received the Tiket d'Or for Best Actress the following year. In 2006, she won the award for best actress for the film Cousine at the Brooklyn International Film Festival in New York, and in 2007, the Grand Prix of the Diaspora at FESPACO. In 2011, Généus was granted a scholarship from the Acting International de Paris. Généus then founded her own production company, Ayizian Productions, in Haiti. In 2014, she directed Vizaj Nou, a portrait series of contemporary Haitian figures, in partnership with Télévision Caraïbes. She directed and co-produced her first documentary for France Télévisions in 2017, Douvan jou ka leve/The Sun Will Rise, which appeared in over twenty festivals and won six awards. In 2021, Généus' debut feature film as a director, Freda (2021), was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section.
