Gerald Machona

Gerald MACHONA (Zimbabwe) is a visual artist with an MA in Fine Arts from Rhodes University and a BA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art. In 2011 he was selected as one of the top 10 emerging young African artists in South Africa in a publication by Business Day South Africa for the Johannesburg Art Fair. Machona works with sculpture, performance, new media, photography and film. The most notable aspect of his work is his innovative use of currency, particularly decommissioned Zimbabwean dollars. Machona’s current work engages with issues of migration, trans-nationality, social interaction and xenophobia in South Africa.
