Georges Méliès

As a young man, the film pioneer Georges MÉLIES (1861-1938, Paris, France) was not very interested in his parents' shoe factory. He preferred to focus on conjuring tricks and the magic of the first moving images. He was the first filmmaker to build his own studio to shoot his films, a specialist in special effects and a great technical innovator. His film A Trip to the Moon (1902) is one of the most important works from the early years of cinema. His success came to an end in 1913, partly as a result of his work being pirated in the USA. He had to sell all his possessions and ended his years selling toys at the Gare Montparnasse.
