Franz SCHNYDER (1910-1993, Switzerland) began his career as a theatre actor and director. In 1941, he directed his first film, the patriotic Gilberte de Courgenay, as part of the Swiss Spiritual national defence. He was most productive during the 1950s. In 1954, he directed Uli, der Knecht, his first of several Jeremias Gotthelf adaptations. The following year, Schnyder released Heidi und Peter, the first Swiss film in colour. Der 10. Mai (1957) was nominated for a Golden Bear at the Berlinale. He would direct his final film Die sechs Kummberbuben in 1968. He spent the next 10 years working on a film about Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, but could not get the film financed. He died in 1993, spending the last years of his life in psychiatric care.
