Deepa Mehta

Deepa Mehta (1949, Amritsar, India) has made an impressive career in Canada film-maker, writer and actress. She studied philosophy in New Delhi. After emigrating to Canada in 1973 she founded the production company Sunrise Films with Paul Saltzman and Dilip Mehta. So far it has been responsible for making more than forty films and television productions. Mehta won first prize at the International Women's Film Festival in Florence with Martha, Ruth & Edie (1988), which she produced and co-directed. Sam and Me also received an honourable mention Cannes during the Caméra d'Or awards ceremony.
