Danièle Huillet

Danièle Huillet

Since 1962, Danièle HUILLET (1936-2006, France), together with her husband Jean-Marie Straub, made more than 20 films based on the work of Bach, Böll, Brecht, Brückner, Cézanne, Corneille, J. de la Cruz, Duras, Engels, Fortini, Hölderlin, Kafka, Mallarmé, Pavese and Schönberg. The couple met in 1952, while preparing to take the entrance exam for La Fémis, although neither ended up attending the film school. They married in 1959. Most of their films have been screened in Rotterdam, and are noted for their rigorous, intellectually stimulating style and radical politics. In 2006, the duo was awarded a Special Lion at Venice Film Festival in recognition of their work. After the death of Huillet, Straub has continued making films on his own.
