Dāvis Sīmanis
Still: The Year Before the WarLatvian filmmaker and theorist Dāvis SĪMANIS started as a cameraman and editor before making his directorial debut Version. LNO (2006), a short documentary about the Latvian National Opera that received the Best Debut Award at Lielais Kristaps National Film Festival. He has made several poetic documentary films, including Escaping Riga (2014), screened at IDFA, DOK Leipzig and CPH:DOX among others. His fictional debut, Exiled (2016), was awarded Best Film at Riga International Film Festival. Sīmanis also teaches film history at the Latvian Academy of Culture in Riga and at Aalto University in Helsinki.
