Catherine Opie

Catherine OPIE (1961, USA) is a Los Angeles-based photographer. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and obtained an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1988. Since 2001, she has been Professor of Photography at UCLA. Her work, which has been exhibited worldwide, includes series of portraits and American urban landscapes. Among her many awards and distinctions are the Smithsonian Archives of American Art Medal (2016), Julius Shulman Institute Award for Photography (2013), Women’s Caucus for Art: President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement (2009) and the United States Artists Fellowship (2006). Her first art film, The Modernist (2017) screens at IFFR.
