Carolee Schneemann

Carolee SCHNEEMANN (1939-2019, USA) was a multidisciplinary visual artist. She taught at several universities, such as the California Institute of the Arts, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and SUNY New Paltz. She graduated in philosophy and poetry from Bard College and painting at Columbia University and earned her M.F.A. degree from the University of Illinois. Her works deal with identity and gender politics, and social taboos. She is known for her provocative performance-art practices and is considered the progenitor of body art. She began her career with paintings that were exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the London National Film Theatre, among others, and later turned to performance-based works. In 1964, she debuted with her best-known work, Meat Joy, at the Festival of Free Expression in Paris. Her films have been screened at various film festivals worldwide, including Cannes. In 2019, she passed away at the age of 79.
