Arūnas ŽEBRIŪNAS (1930-2013, Lithuania) was the son of a military officer and grew up excelling in basketball and rowing. In 1955 he graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a degree in Architecture and joined the Lithuanian Film Studio. He made his directorial debut in 1959, directing the chapter ‘The Last Shot’ from The Living Heroes. His 1964 film The Girl and the Echo won the Majority’s Silver Sail award at Locarno Film Festival. In 1999 he directed his final film, Lietuvos prisikėlimas, together with Aloyzas Jančoras. This documentary presents the history of Lithuania’s independence movement Sąjūdis, of which Žebriūnas himself was a member. In 2010 he was awarded a Golden Crane at the Lithuanian Film Awards for his contribution to Lithuanian film.
