Alexander Rogozhkin (1949) studied history in Leningrad and worked as production designer for Lenfilm Studios. From 1977 to 1981 he studied directing at the Moscow film academy, the VGIK, in the master class of Sergei Gerasimov. His film Karaul (1989) was awarded the Bauer Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Living With an Idiot (1993) established him as one of Russia's most original directors.
