Adachi Masao

Adachi Masao

ADACHI Masao (1939, Japan) is known for his experimental, political and sexually tinted work from the early 1960s. He is also famous for his collaborations with important Japanese filmmakers such as Oshima Nagisa and Wakamatsu Koji. In the early 1970s, he turned his back on Japan by joining the Japanese Red Army in support of the Palestine resistance, spending the subsequent 27 years in the Middle East. After more than 30 years of absence, he made his comeback as a filmmaker with Prisoner/Terrorist in 2007. This film was programmed together with Gushing Prayer (1971) at IFFR 2008. In addition, he was the subject of documentaries by Eric Baudelaire and Philippe Grandrieux, which were both shown in Rotterdam in 2012. In the light of his new film Artist of Fasting (2015), IFFR will dedicate a retrospective to the revolutionary filmmaker in 2016.
