Erasmus University on current affairs and the latest academic research – that’s Studio Erasmus. Intriguing, thought provoking, but always academically sound. On Tuesday 31 January 2017 in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg, the programme includes:

  • What are Game of Thrones fans looking for in Dubrovnik? – Cultural scientist Abby Waysdorf on media tourism, or: why we want to see locations featured in films and series for ourselves.

  • How realistic is the film psychiatrist? – Professor of Psychiatry Steven Kushner on the (in)credibility of Tony Soprano and the degree of realism in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (and the far reaching consequences of this portrayal).

  • Institutional racism and the movies - cultural sociologist Julian Schaap and journalist Malique Mohamud on good intentions, representation, stereotypes, and ‘black rebels’ at this year’s festival.

  • How do we actually look at art when we know that it is art on forehand? – Noah van Dongen finds out by scanning participants brains in an fMRI.

And live music by Arthur & Sebastiaan, who present their totally unique interpretation of classical soundtracks.

2 Feb | Erasmus @ IFFR Film Night

For all film lovers and first-timers! The best way to get acquainted with IFFR is to visit it. Get to enjoy one of the best films of the festival during a special screening for students and employees of Erasmus University.

The film that will be shown this year is A Hustlers Diary.

Ivica Zubak, Sweden, 2017

The actions of the criminal Metin – just like the disconsolate Swedish settings in which his life unfolds – are veiled in shades of grey. He has grand dreams about becoming famous, and unfortunately reality keeps getting in the way and hitting him in the face. A layered portrait, both raw and funny.
