Niet zomaar een film met David Bowie op IFFR. The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976, Nicolas Roeg) is de sci-fi cultfilm waarop het theaterstuk Lazarus is gebaseerd. Op 7 december 2015 ging Lazarus glorieus in première in New York. Naar een idee van Bowie en Ivo van Hove, vooral bekend als artistiek directeur van Toneelgroep Amsterdam, deed de regie. Het theaterstuk behoort met het vijfentwintigste studioalbum Blackstar tot de laatste grote afscheidswoorden van David Bowie aan de wereld.
In The Man Who Fell to Earth speelt een razendknappe Bowie Thomas Jerome Newton: een alien die naar de aarde is gekomen op zoek naar water voor zijn eigen planeet. Vervreemding alom. Van Hove liet zich ontvallen dat hij zeker wist dat Bowie zichzelf als Newton zag. Nogmaals op het witte doek: voor Bowie- en filmfans een unieke ervaring. Voorafgaand en na de film kun je jezelf onderdompelen in Bowie-sentiment, want een dj draait de juiste platen. Alles in het teken van de (muziek)legende die onlangs de aarde verliet.
