3Radicals: Joseph Plateau

De tentoonstelling 3Radicals combineert het recentste grafische werk van Artist in Focus Cameron Jamie naast een belangrijk overzicht van het driedimensionele oeuvre van Filmmaker in Focus Robert Breer (kinetische sculpturen, objecten, filmmaterialen). De derde centrale figuur is de in 1993 overleden Paul Sharits, van wie voor het eerst in Nederland een omvangrijke selectie filminstallaties en mixed media werk wordt gepresenteerd. Tezamen illustreren ze hoe eigenzinnige pioniers van de experimentele film opnieuw relevant zijn voor de jongste generatie audiovisuele beeldenstormers.

Als een media-archeologische opmaat wordt met een kleine presentatie ook gerefereerd naar de Belgische onderzoeker Joseph Plateau (1801-1883) die als wetenschapper en pionier van het filmprincipe aan de wieg stond van de animatiefilm, van de opart en vooral ook van het visuele experiment als levenshouding. Naar aanleiding van zijn experimenten om minutenlang rechtstreeks naar de zon te kijken, construeerde Plateau experimentele kleurschijven. Met die schijven creëerde hij series bewegende figuren en tekeningen, en legde daarmee de basis voor de praktijk die Breer, Sharits en Jamie elk op een volstrekt persoonlijke manier hebben verder ontwikkeld.
