IFFR Young Selectors: Srefidensi Dey – Wan Pipel

Event

Year round 2021

On 25 November 2021 it will be 46 years since Suriname became independent from the Netherlands. The history of Suriname and the Netherlands is inextricably linked. Rotterdams Open Doek and IFFR Young Selectors want to shed more light on emerging Surinamese filmmakers; The iconic Surinamese film Wan Pipel by filmmaker Pim de la Parra and two shorts by young Surinamese makers will be screened in Lantarenvenster.

About Wan Pipel
Wan Pipel means one people. Wan Pipel is the first Surinamese feature film shot in an independent Suriname. The film was released in 1976 and became a great success in Suriname; in the Netherlands however, the film was poorly received. Today, Wan Pipel is considered a classic. The film is broadcasted on Surinamese television every year around independence. With Wan Pipel, Pim de la Parra paid a tribute to Suriname. A young Surinamese resident in the Netherlands returns to Suriname when his mother is dying. There he falls under the spell of his native country and builds a new life with a Hindu woman. Both his family in Suriname and his Dutch ex-girlfriend try to persuade him to return to the Netherlands.

About Unity for Surinam and Groeipijn (Growing Pains)
With this programme we want to make a connection between the young generation of Surinamese makers and the old generation of Surinamese makers. That is why we also screen two short films by Surinamese filmmakers: Unity for Surinam by Steven Elbers and Groeipijn by Ashley Röttjers. Steven Elbers made the short film Unity for Surinam for a Filling Pieces campaign, in which he shows the beauty, diversity and bravery of the Surinamese diaspora and celebrates the Dutch Surinamese community. Groeipijn by Ashley Röttjers is a short film that examines the meaning of family in the non-white Dutch identity. The personal project arose from the identity conflict Ashley developed growing up and the endless dialogues she has about black Dutch identity.
