IFFR\u2019s Hubert Bals Fund (HBF) has unveiled its selection of 20 projects to receive a grant of \u20ac10,000 each under its flagship Development Support Scheme 2026 \u2013 marking an increase of a third on the 2025 allocation of 15 projects. For 2026, eight of the 20 projects have been <\/strong>selected following a regional focus on Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia \u2013 including the first project the HBF has supported from North Macedonia, Tiger Short Award-winner Anka Gujabidze’s debut feature, and two projects each from Ukraine and Serbia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tamara Tatishvili, Head of the Hubert Bals Fund, said: <\/strong>“In times where development funding is increasingly under threat, it’s remarkable that we’ve been able to increase our grant allocation, from 15 in 2025 to 20 in 2026. This includes a welcome regional focus on Southeast Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia, ensuring our support reaches areas typically underrepresented in funding decisions. The selection carries a strong IFFR alumni presence and reflects an incredible breadth of contemporary filmmaking \u2013 distinctive voices expressing their artistic freedom, whatever the context. A number of IFFR alumni are present within this year\u2019s selection, including two IFFR Tiger Short Award-winners embarking on their feature debuts: Dean Wei (The Apple Doesn\u2019t Fall<\/strong>\u2026, IFFR 2026 and KNF Award) and Anka Gujabidze (Temo Re<\/strong>, IFFR 2025 and KNF Award). Themes across the selection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s HBF Development Scheme cohort features a number of projects that deal with themes of displacement, migration and belonging, including: Tom\u00e1s Espaillat and Nika Zhukova’s animation Donde duermen las abejas<\/strong>, which traces an elderly woman’s memories of a displaced European refugee who found a home with her; A Room Outside the World<\/strong><\/strong>, Marcel Beltr\u00e1n (Rotterdam Lab 2015), which follows a Cuban woman rebuilding her life in S\u00e3o Paulo; while Lincoln P\u00e9ricles’s Filme de Arquivo<\/strong> moves between Brazil, Portugal, France and Sudan to ask who gets remembered and who gets erased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a strong African presence in the selection, including Babatunde Apalowo’s In the Wake of Yesterday<\/strong> which follows a woman exiled from a Sahelian settlement after refusing to falsify her own record, and Nolitha Refilwe Mkulisi’s (Let Them Be Seen<\/strong>, IFFR 2026) Lady Pearl<\/strong> \u2013<\/strong> a thrilling absurdist satire set in a shape-shifting hotel, grappling with the long-term consequences of apartheid and the contradictions of modern South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A number of this year\u2019s projects also feature examinations of ageing and later-life, such as Dina Duma’s As Long as You Can Climb a Tree<\/strong>, which follows a 65-year-old widow whose quiet life spirals into chaos after she joins a group of pensioners staging fake dog attacks to survive; Kanishka Sonthalia and Siddesh Shetty’s documentary Silver Linings<\/strong> captures older adults finding love through friendship clubs and speed-dating events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t
