<\/a>First titles confirmed as audiences, filmmakers, industry and press to reunite for IFFR 2022<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) announces the first confirmed titles for its 51st edition which takes place in Rotterdam from 26 January to 6 February 2022. The festival is planned as a physical event that celebrates the reunion of audiences, filmmakers, industry and press with a full festival programme. As IFFR veterans including Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Tan Chui Mui return, there are world premieres for feature debuts by Alberto De Michele and David Easteal. Details of IFFR Pro Days are also confirmed.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Festival director Vanja Kaludjercic: \u201cWith huge excitement, we\u2019re announcing the return of our filmmaking community to Rotterdam. This is an opportunity to fully demonstrate the\u00a0revamped programme structure<\/a>\u00a0which we announced last year, but more importantly, it’s the chance to finally celebrate the collective experience of cinema again. The programme we\u2019re building for IFFR 2022 will be one worthy of a full return to cinemas and venues in Rotterdam, and this\u00a0mix of exciting debuts and seasoned come-backs<\/a>\u00a0in our first announcement reflects that perfectly. As we move towards the physical return of our festival, we remain determined and ready to adapt to whatever the circumstances require.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Limelight<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Limelight lineup of avant-premieres and cinematic highlights from the year\u2019s festival circuit will include Thai director and IFFR-regular Apichatpong Weerasethakul with his Hubert Bals Fund-supported\u00a0Memoria<\/a>, which won the Jury Prize at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival. Other filmmakers returning with celebrated work include Japanese director Hamaguchi Ry\u016bsuke with\u00a0Drive My Car<\/a>, French-Argentine filmmaker Gaspar No\u00e9 with\u00a0Vortex<\/a>, British director Clio Barnard with\u00a0Ali & Ava<\/a>, and Norwegian director Joachim Trier whose\u00a0The Worst Person in the World<\/a>\u00a0won Renate Reinsve the award for Best Actress at Cannes. Also confirmed are\u00a0Freaks Out<\/a>\u00a0by Italian director Gabriele Mainetti, and Audrey Diwan\u2019s Venice Golden Lion winner\u00a0L’\u00e9v\u00e9nement<\/a>\u00a0from France.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbour<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Italian director Fabrizio Ferraro returns to IFFR in the festival\u2019s programme Harbour, home to the broadest range of contemporary cinema found at the festival, which presents the world premiere of his 1944-set drama\u00a0I morti rimangono con la bocca aperta<\/a>. Tiger Award-winning Malaysian filmmaker Tan Chui Mui demonstrates her martial arts skills in her most recent film,\u00a0Barbarian Invasion<\/a>. Brazilian director Anita Rocha da Silveira is selected for\u00a0Medusa<\/a>, a former CineMart project that was awarded the Sebastiane Latino Award for best representing sexual and gender diversity at this year\u2019s San Sebasti\u00e1n International Film Festival. Russia\u2019s Lado Kvataniya is selected for his serial killer film\u00a0The Execution<\/a>, and is joined in the lineup by Jordanian filmmaker Bassel Ghandour with his debut feature\u00a0The Alleys<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bright Future<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first titles in the Bright Future programme, dedicated to young and emerging film talent, are announced. With a previous selection in the Tiger Short Competition, Dutch-Italian director Alberto De Michele will world-premiere his debut feature\u00a0The Last Ride of the Wolves<\/a>, a heist-drama inspired by the life of his father. Spanish director Juli\u00e1n G\u00e9nisson world-premieres his curiously cheerful\u00a0Inmotep<\/a>, as does Australian director David Easteal whose fixed-camera debut feature\u00a0The Plains<\/a>\u00a0is set almost entirely during daily car commutes in suburban Melbourne. Danish director Tea Lindeburg is also selected after she won the Silver Shell for best director at San Sebasti\u00e1n earlier this year for her 19th century-set drama\u00a0As in Heaven<\/a>.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

IFFR Pro Days<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Professionals are invited to return to Rotterdam\u2019s \u2018de Doelen\u2019 venue for\u00a0IFFR Pro Days<\/a>\u00a0which take place from 30 January to 2 February, encapsulating\u00a0CineMart<\/a>,\u00a0Rotterdam Lab<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Pro Hub<\/a>. Selected projects and professionals looking to collaborate will participate in CineMart, with one-to-one meetings and informal networking taking place in person.Rotterdam Lab takes place in two parts: an online programme of workshops and masterclasses (24 January to 28 January) in the lead-up to Pro Days, followed by a three-day on-site programme in Rotterdam (31 January to 2 February), where participants will be connected with international professionals and experts. The Pro Hub team will provide connectivity and practical services for selected filmmakers and attending industry.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
