During a panel led by IFFR\u2019s Clare Stewart, the spotlight turned to the Displacement Film Fund, where Cate Blanchett, MoMA\u2019s Rajendra Roy and grant recipients Maryna Er Gorbach and Mo Harawe discussed the pressing mission to support displaced artists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;\" class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/A-Useful-Ghost-1.png\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:100%;height:100%;object-fit:cover;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Useful Ghost wins the Grand Prix in Semaine de la Critique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thai filmmaker Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke claimed the top prize in the Cannes Semaine de la Critique sidebar with his HBF-backed feature debut <strong>A Useful Ghost<\/strong> \u2013 a delightful mix of supernatural ghost story, queer sex comedy and political and environmental satire that \u201cisn&#8217;t quite like anything you\u2019ve seen before\u201d, according to <em>Variety<\/em>&#8216;s Catherine Bray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Backed by HBF+Europe (an initiative supported by Creative Europe), the film \u2013 which stars a possessed vacuum cleaner \u2013 received \u20ac60,000 in production support from the Hubert Bals Fund. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmverdict.com\/a-useful-ghost\/\">Kevin Jagernauth for <em>The Film Verdict<\/em> wrote<\/a>: \u201cBoonbunchachoke&#8217;s bold and beautiful debut marks a filmmaker to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1687\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/3BAWE2X-copy-scaled.jpg?image-crop-positioner-ts=1748443667\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210534\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Festival Director, Vanja Kaludjercic on Un Certain Regard Jury<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>IFFR\u2019s Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic sat on the jury for the Un Certain Regard section, dedicated to emerging talent and bold filmmaking, presided over by British director Molly Manning Walker (<strong>How to Have Sex<\/strong>, IFFR 2024), alongside fellow jury members French-Swiss filmmaker Louise Courvoisier, Italian director Roberto Minervini and Argentinian actor Nahuel P\u00e9rez Biscayart.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI appreciate cinema that illuminates me in one way or another\u201d, she explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festival-cannes.com\/en\/medialibrary\/interview-with-vanja-kaludjercic-member-of-the-un-certain-regard-jury\/\">an interview with Cannes during the festival<\/a>, \u201cand that&#8217;s why you can&#8217;t get bored because it&#8217;s an eternal source of inspiration.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jury awarded Chilean filmmaker Diego C\u00e9spedes\u2019 <strong>The Mysterious Gaze Of The Flamingo<\/strong> with the top prize, as the jury prize went to Simon Mesa Soto\u2019s <strong>A Poet<\/strong>, and best director prize to Palestinian filmmakers Tarzan and Arab Nasser for <strong>Once Upon A Time in Gaza<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Displacement Film Fund panel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Growing human displacement is one of the greatest crises and challenges facing us as a species\u201d, said Cate Blanchett at a panel dedicated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/hubert-bals-fund\/funding-schemes\/displacement-film-fund\">Displacement Film Fund<\/a> on Friday as part of the Cannes programme. Supporting displaced artists and &#8220;breaking down the stigmatisation of those stories&#8221; are driving motivations for establishing the Fund, she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1621\" height=\"1063\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/DFF-panel-Cannes.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210507\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Harry Upton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hosted by IFFR&#8217;s Managing Director Clare Stewart, Blanchett was joined by grant recipients Maryna Er Gorbach and Mo Harawe, and Rajendra Roy \u2013 Chief Curator of Film at MoMA and Co-Chair of The Academy\u2019s International Film Award Executive Committee. Set in 2004 and touching on AIDS, parents and family secrets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/reviews\/romeria-review-carla-simons-third-semi-autobiographical-feature-is-pensive-and-rather-lovely\/5205353.article\">Wendy Ide for <em>Screen<\/em><\/a> writes that \u201cSim\u00f3n has a rare gift for capturing the unpredictable, mercurial beast that is the family.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"907\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/187848.webp?image-crop-positioner-ts=1748379650\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210509\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Film still: <strong>Romer\u00eda<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe director zooms into crooked wooden alabasters and delicately swinging wind chimes, grasping at texture and sound with the voracity of those who understand the stakes of faded memories\u201d, wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/lwlies.com\/festivals\/romeria-first-look-review\/#:~:text=The%20semiautobiographical%20drama%20is%20set,lens%20of%20a%20digital%20camera.\">Rafa Sales Ross for <em>Little White Lies<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Un Certain Regard, the \u201crambunctious spaghetti Western\u201d (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/reviews\/heads-or-tails-review-john-c-reilly-is-buffalo-bill-in-this-rambunctious-spaghetti-western\/5204762.article\">Screen<\/a><\/em>)<strong> Testa o croce?<\/strong> by Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppis (CineMart 2023) was praised for its genre-bending prowess and vivid sun-kissed cinematography. <a href=\"https:\/\/cineuropa.org\/en\/newsdetail\/477771\/\">Camillo De Marco in Cineuropa<\/a> describes the film, which picked up the Eurimages Co-development Award at CineMart, as \u201coverflowing with passion for film as a timeless medium to be manipulated.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/lwlies.com\/festivals\/heads-or-tails-first-look-review\/\">Mark Asch for <em>Little White Lies<\/em><\/a> continues: \u201cthere are wonders here in the vein of the dirty-fingernailed magic realism that is contemporary Italian cinema\u2019s most rewarding mode.\u201d Asch gives particular praise to John C. Reilly\u2019s \u201cmassively charismatic performance\u201d as Buffalo Bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1282\" height=\"688\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/186635.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210510\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Film still: <strong>Testa o croce?<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Screening in Cannes Premiere, Japanese filmmaker Koji Fukada\u2019s latest feature, <strong>Love on Trial<\/strong> (CineMart 2022), tells the story of Mai, a rising J-Pop idol whose burgeoning career is jeopardized when she violates the \u201cno love\u201d clause in her contract by entering a romantic relationship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/thefilmstage.com\/cannes-review-koji-fukadas-love-on-trial-gracefully-unpacks-idol-and-agency\/\">Blake Simons of <em>The Film Stage<\/em><\/a> observes, the film \u201cgracefully unpacks idol and agency,\u201d offering no explosive confrontations but rather revealing \u201cthe slow suffocation of an industry that constrains these characters\u201d and the \u201cglimmering catharsis of the personal love that seeks to set them free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"907\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/186784.webp?image-crop-positioner-ts=1748379858\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210511\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Film still: <strong>Love on Trial<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Promised Sky by Erige Sehiri opens Un Certain Regard&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>French-Tunisian filmmaker Erige Sehiri\u2019s \u201cbittersweet celebration of endurance and sacrifice\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/reviews\/promised-sky-review-follow-up-to-under-the-fig-trees-opens-un-certain-regard\/5204754.article\">Alan Hunter in <em>Screen<\/em><\/a>) <strong>Promised Sky<\/strong> opened the Un Certain Regard section. Working on the margins of fiction and documentary, the film is a story of sub-Saharan migration to Tunisia, following the fate of three women, a pastor, a student, and an exiled mother, who together shelter Kenza, a shipwreck survivor.&nbsp;The project was supported with \u20ac60,000 of production funding through the HBF+Europe scheme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/186628-scaled-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210512\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Film still: <strong>Promised Sky<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cineuropa.org\/en\/newsdetail\/477481\/\"><em>Cineuropa<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>described it as \u201cwonderfully paced and endowed with an incredibly fluid sense of movement and varied d\u00e9cor\u201d, and \u201can incredibly human film, placing focus on an endearing trio of women from sub-Saharan Africa living in Tunis and developing a growing awareness of the world.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film capped off <a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/blog-cannes-selections-for-iffr-backed-films-and-talent\">a spread of IFFR-backed talent in Cannes<\/a>, including immersive media project <strong>Lacuna<\/strong> by Dutch makers Maartje Wegdam and Nienke Huitenga Broeren, produced by IFFR-regular Corine Meijers (Studio Biarritz) and Ilja Kok, which had its international premiere in the Cannes Immersive Competition, following its world premiere at IFFR 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hubert Bals Fund launches HBF+Brazil scheme, and joins Indonesia co-production panel&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hubert Bals Fund joined partners Spcine, RioFilme Prefeitura do Rio and Projeto Paradiso at the March\u00e9 du Film to sign the cooperation agreement for <a href=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/blog-hbf-brazil-co-development-support\">HBF+Brazil: Co-development Support<\/a>, an initiative dedicated to supporting the early development of projects by second and third time filmmakers from S\u00e3o Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and the rest of Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/iffr.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Brasilian-Stand-Marche-du-Film_Cannes2025_\u00a9Camilla-Canalini_1043-min-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-210419\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">HBF+Brazil launch, image: \u00a9Camilla Canalini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The agreement was officially signed by Clare Stewart and Tamara Tatishvili of the Hubert Bals Fund and IFFR; Leonardo Edde, President of RioFilme; Josephine Bourgois, Executive Director of Projeto Paradiso; and Lyara Oliveira, President of Spcine, and was attended by Joelma Oliveira Gonzaga, Audiovisual Secretary of the Brazilian Minist\u00e9rio da Cultura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It came as Brazilian HBF-alumni Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho won best director at Cannes for <strong>The Secret Agent<\/strong>, a Netherlands co-production with IFFR-regular Erik Glijnijs of Lemming Film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following a presentation in La Fabrique, the Hubert Bals Fund joined the panel &#8220;Co-production &amp; Distribution Opportunities in Indonesia&#8221;, where, alongside Denis Vaslin (Volya Films), they shared insights on international collaboration through the case study of <strong>This City Is a Battlefield<\/strong> (IFFR 2025 closing film). The HBF participated in the Indonesian Night, hosted by the Indonensian Ministry of Culture, where they also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.detik.com\/berita\/d-7922466\/dukung-film-indonesia-menbud-jalin-komunikasi-dengan-hubert-bals-fund\">met with Culture Minister<\/a>, Fadli Zon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t<div
