On 18 April, TENT, OASE and IFFR \u2013 together with artist Jaasir Linger \u2013 present a layered programme centred on Surinamese voices and traditions. As part of the Dolf Henkes Prize, for which Linger has been nominated, he is developing a series of cross-disciplinary events across the city. The films Inheemse Surinamers in Rotterdam<\/strong> by Demis Rolador and Monikondee<\/strong> by Tolin Erwin Alexander will be screened at OASE. There will also be Indigenous Surinamese music by S.C.V. Masaraipono, as well as Surinamese Marron dance and music by Kula Skoro. Will you join us?<\/p>\n\n\n

About Inheemse Surinamers in Rotterdam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are descended from the original inhabitants of this land, and that\u2019s something to be proud of!\u201d says one of the members of SCV Wajonong. Since the 1980s, this cultural association has been the go-to place in Rotterdam for celebrating and preserving the culture and traditions of Indigenous Surinamese people. This heartfelt documentary highlights the importance of such organisations, which help smaller communities gain visibility and a voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the film Monikondee<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For centuries, the Marrons in Suriname kept the capitalist world at a distance by holding on to their ancestral values. As descendants of formerly enslaved Africans who escaped plantations, they lived largely autonomously, but economic interests are increasingly encroaching on the rainforest. Boatman Boogie transports goods along the Marowijne River to remote communities, which are becoming more dependent due to climate change and pollution. When he is called to attend his nephew\u2019s court case, he finds himself torn between work and tradition, while the gap between past and present becomes ever more visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Jaasir Linger<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0In his art and films, Jaasir Linger translates Surinamese cultural heritage into powerful visual narratives. He is also active as a speaker and organiser of events focused on Afro-Surinamese cultural heritage, collaborating with various Surinamese heritage foundations and organisations. Linger aims to contribute to knowledge transfer for current and future generations, including around Winti\u2014a spiritual tradition that, due to a colonial ban until 1971, was long surrounded by misunderstanding and stigma. With his nomination for the Dolf Henkes Prize 2026, he is organising a series of cross-disciplinary events with TENT, placing Surinamese and broader diaspora cultures in Rotterdam at the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\t
