This latest edition of IFFR x Dokhuis Filmclub celebrates National Education Film Month with a film about growing up. Join us on Friday 7 March for a screening of the Rotterdam film Shabu<\/strong> (IFFR 2022)! After the film, we’ll chat, have a drink and enjoy some snacks.<\/p>\n\n\n

About Shabu<\/a> (Shamira Rapha\u00ebla, 2021)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Shooting the breeze, Shabu (14) hangs around the Peperklip, a striking residential complex in Rotterdam\u2019s Feijenoord neighbourhood. This Rotterdammer with Surinamese roots knows everyone here, and thinks he\u2019s already a star. Later, Shabu is convinced, he\u2019ll become rich and famous. But not just yet, because this summer he\u2019s in the doghouse: he \u2018borrowed\u2019 his grandma\u2019s car and crashed it, and now he has to pay for the damage. When selling ices and stacking shelves doesn\u2019t bring in enough, Shabu decides to draw on his musicality, charm, and network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this infectious coming-of-age documentary, we follow the charismatic teen over the course of a hot summer, as he carries out his chores, has romantic problems with his \u2018wifey\u2019, and hangs around indolently with his friends, alternately taking in and dishing out wisdom. In the background, we regularly hear admonitions from his family, interspersed with the music he always has with him. Winner of the IDFA Award for Best Youth Film in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Film in Dokhuis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dokhuis offers a unique space where people can come together to watch and create films. They believe cinema possesses the transformative power to help us explore not only the world around us but also the depths of our own selves. It serves as a dynamic medium for fostering meaningful dialogue and connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting in 2025, Dokhuis will host a monthly film evening on the first Friday of every month, as part of the IFFR Filmclub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About IFFR Filmclub <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Filmclub is a new initiative of IFFR, currently in the pilot phase, where (future) film lovers, young filmmakers and creatives come together to watch films and exchange interests. The idea is that the Filmclub will take place biweekly at various locations throughout Rotterdam, where a mix of (inter)national films, both new and true classics, will be shown in a relaxed setting in combination with discussions, workshops or parties. Whether you are discovering cinema for the first time or are already well on your way as a filmmaker, the Filmclub is a place to get inspired, network or just come and watch a film. The club works together with local communities throughout Rotterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t
