World première Double Play
On Friday, 27 January, IFFR will celebrate the world première of Ernest Dickerson’s Double Play, a film adaptation of the hit novel Dubbelspel [Double Play] by author Frank Martinus Arion from Curacao. The film will be followed by a Q&A in the presence of the cast and crew who are travelling to Rotterdam specially for the occasion. Afterwards, there will of course be drinks and snacks and you will be treated to some fantastic live music.
Under Dickerson’s direction, the story of Dubbelspel is brought into the present, opening up historical and contemporary perspectives of Curacao on the screen. A thrilling sketch of society in Curacao centred around the apparently innocent domino game played by four men every Sunday. Until it unexpectedly takes a dramatic turn. There are dangerous secrets, women who make radical choices and a boy who sees everything.
For many years, filmmaker Ernest Dickerson was Spike Lee’s regular cameraman, shooting the classics She’s Gotta Have It (1986), Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), among others. His own films include Juice (1992) with Tupac Shakur and Bones (2001)with Snoop Dogg, and he has directed episodes of The Wire, Dexter and The Walking Dead. Producer Lisa Cortes’ credits include the highly praised film Precious. They will both be present at the world première, as will co-producer Gregory Elias (Curacao International Film Festival Rotterdam, Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival) along with many of the cast: Lennie James, Melanie Liburd, Dani Dare, Colin Salmon, Mustafa Shakir, Alexander Karim, Barbara Eve Harris, Isaach De Bankolé, Saycon Sengbloh, La La Anthony, and others.
King Willem-Alexander attends the premiere and speaks afterwards with the cast, producers, and representatives of the Curaçao community in Rotterdam. Read more here.
