Aaaaaaaah!Steve Oram IFFR 2016 80′
How might the world look if people lived like apes? Then the mating call makes an entrance and people urinate in all corners of the house to leave their scent behind. In this dry and humorous film, it’s scarily apparent that as humans we don’t really differ that much from apes.
AsaKitano Takeshi IFFR 2016 4′
Faux-sentimental short by ‘Beat’ Takeshi (aka Kitano Takeshi), made for his latest TV show. He plays a pensioner who takes a walk in the park.
Bone TomahawkS. Craig Zahler IFFR 2016 132′
A bloody horror Western with Kurt Russell as a dauntless sheriff. He and his three sidekicks head out into the desert looking for kidnapped villagers and come across the breeding ground of a cannibalistic Indian tribe. A very wayward debut and a loving ode to exploitation films of yore.
The Childhood of a LeaderBrady Corbet IFFR 2016 116′
Impressive debut by young American director (and actor) Brady Corbet - with a small yet striking (double) role by Robert Pattinson - sketches the rise of fascism based on the childhood of a boy. The probing and ominous soundtrack by Scott Walker is performed live by the Codarts Symphony Orchestra. Closing film IFFR 2016.
Fear ItselfCharlie Lyne IFFR 2016 88′
Horror is more than a term, genre or concept. Countless scenes from many films provide proof in an overwhelming montage. A voiceover takes the viewer by the hand and explains these scary moments, meticulously analysing the meaning of fear.
Gonin SagaIshii Takashi IFFR 2016 130′
If the original Gonin was the Titanic of Yakuza movies, Ishii Takashi’s twenty-years-later sequel brings the tangle of reckless attacks, jealousies and resentments bang up to date. A stylish, all-star, ultra-hard-boiled vision of 'Yakuza DNA'.
Green RoomJeremy Saulnier IFFR 2016 95′
A touring punk band finds itself facing a very unpleasant surprise in a shady club in Oregon. Their last-minute performance turns into a bloodbath and they have to pull out all the stops to arm themselves against extremely violent neo-Nazis. Nail-bitingly tense, nerve-wracking thriller.
High-RiseBen Wheatley IFFR 2016 119′
Stylised, virtuoso drama by Ben Wheatley (Sightseers). A doctor moves into a luxury apartment building, an autonomous community where everyone knows their proper place. Then a class rebellion develops and the residents unite in murderous gangs - with surrealist, hysterical and post-apocalyptic consequences.
The Love WitchAnna Biller IFFR 2016 120′
Elaine enchants men with her charms, consuming them by the net full. Yet this narcissistic witch reverses the traditional roles of the sexes. A sophisticated feminist message in a fantastic 1960s setting.
NewsKitano Takeshi IFFR 2016 5′
Sardonic short by ‘Beat’ Takeshi (aka Kitano Takeshi), made for his latest TV show. Two cops in a car mull over some evidence.
OwSuzuki Yohei IFFR 2016 89′
The most ‘political’ black-comedy noir from Japan since Oshima’s Death By Hanging, Suzuki Yohei’s mind-fuck of a movie runs rings around the genre. What makes one suburban family freeze, physically and mentally? Is there a sci-fi explanation? Or is Japan’s deep-rooted inertia to blame?
SharingShinozaki Makoto IFFR 2016 112′
Shinozaki Makoto’s mystery deals with the fall-out from the 2011 tsunami. A psychology professor and one of her students push their obsessions with personal loss and national trauma to the point where their sanity seems at risk. A noir vision tinged with fantasy-horror.
The Whispering StarSono Sion IFFR 2016 100′
A humanoid robot travels in her rickety, rented spaceship from planet to planet, delivering parcels. Meditative, minimalist and absurdist anti-sci-fi by all-rounder Sono Sion (Tokyo Tribe). The stunning, apocalyptic black-and-white images were shot near Fukushima's devastated nuclear power station.
