Merzak Allouache
Merzak Allouache (1944, Algeria) studied filmmaking in Algiers at the Institut National du Cinéma and subsequently at IDHEC in Paris. After his debut Omar Gatlato (1976), he has made several documentaries about his birthplace Algeria. Based in Paris, he has been directing films in between France and Algeria. In 1994, Bab el-Oued City won the international critics' award at Cannes.
