Matsumoto Toshio at IFFR

MATSUMOTO Toshio (1932-2017) has long been his country's foremost propagandist for independent, experimental and avant-garde cinema. He graduated from Tokyo University in 1955, started making short films in 1956, and published the first of several books on film theory and the history of film in 1963. His first feature film was Funeral Parade of Roses (1969), considered one of the most important works of the Japanese New Wave. Matsumoto was also professor and dean of Arts at the Kyoto University of Art & Design and the president of the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences. He lived in Tokyo until his passing in 2017.
