Still: Camila
Considered one of Argentina’s greatest filmmakers, María Luisa BEMBERG (1922–1995, Argentina) was born in Buenos Aires into a wealthy family. Instead of receiving a formal education, she was privately tutored by a governess. In her work, Bemberg often focused on Argentinian upper-class women “transgressing the boundaries and limits of their societies”, and employed a female gaze with regard to the aesthetics. Two of her films featured at Venice, where she was also a jury member. Camila (1984) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Miss Mary (1986) received honorary mentions at Tokyo and Venice.
