Julien Maire (1969) is and artist and performance artist, living and working in Berlin. In his work he deconstructs and re-invents the technology of audio-visual media. His art lies in the hand-made images, which are put into movement during for instance a mechanized projection-performance.<br /><br /><br />

A performance Trigger, whereby each image, or flash of light is triggered by a live gunshot. In Trigger the interaction between the sound of the gun and the image is utterly direct.

Playing with perspective and space to create a “real” virtual reality, Julien Maire ponders on an archaic way of representing reality using the most recent technology. Over the last decade, Maire has mastered and used in unexpected ways advanced technologies such as laser cutters, precision optics, and 3D printers to create an ironic but no less poetic comment on contemporary media.

In this performance, a man shapes amorphous little heaps with ‘slow motion material.’ Maire distills the ‘essences’ of cinema from the medium itself, and applies them to other materials.

Model for the Apocalypse

For this unique variation on 3D-cinema, the artist created his images using a 3D-printer. Like so many prototypes from early cinema, the piece consists of just a short loop.

Artist/performer Julien Maire deconstructed a video camera, but kept the light sensor intact. Dots of light spread throughout the space are being recorded by this camera and form a colourful light play.
