Jacques DOILLON (1944, France) studied philosophy and worked as cutter and assistant director for Alain Robbe-Grillet, among others. Today, Doillon is a highly respected French auteur filmmaker who often explores themes such as childhood, adolescence, and the complexities of romance. From 1969 to 1975 he made short films, largely on commission. Together with Alain Resnais and Jean Rouch, he made his first feature film in 1973, the episodic L’an 01. Doillon often gives lead roles to new and debuting female actors in his films on family life and women. Through his films, many actors have had their breakthrough, including Fanny Bastien, Sandrine Bonnaire, Judith Godrèche, Marianne Denicourt, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Juliette Binoche. For his psychological drama La drôlesse, Doillon was nominated for two César awards in 1979. La pirate (1984) was a Golden Palm nominee at the Cannes Film Festival. Le petit criminel (1991), one of his most successful films in the 90s, won an Honourable Mention at the 41st Berlin International Film Festival.
