Fukasaku Kinji

Still: Battle Royale
FUKASAKU Kinji (1930-2003, Japan) began studying cinema after World War II, before switching to scriptwriting. After graduating in 1953, he joined Toei company as an assistant director. He made his directorial debut in 1961, directing Drifting Detective: Tragedy in the Red Valley and Drifting Detective: Black Wind in the Harbor, both starring Sonny Chiba. In 1973, he directed the groundbreaking yakuza film Battles Without Honor and Humanity, which spawned seven sequels and three spin-off films. After Hokuriku Proxy War (1977), he stopped making yakuza films. In 1993, he received a special Career Prize at Yokohama Film Festival. Battle Royale (2000) would become his most famous work. Also in 2000, IFFR devoted an entire programme section to his work. After his death in 2003, his son Fukasaku Kenta finished Battle Royale II: Requiem. That same year, he was awarded a Blue Ribbon Special Award and a Special Award by the Japanese Academy in celebration of his work.
