Coletivo Audiovisual Elekô
COLETIVO AUDIOVISUAL ELEKÔ is an art collective that prompts black women to participate in the film industry by teaching and producing movies that have a completely feminine crew, composed mostly by black women. Their 3 movies have gathered and empowered more than 200 black woman altogether, both experienced professionals and apprentices. Although 53% of Brazilians declare themselves black, only 4% of the roles in national films are represented by black women, often confined to subaltern and stereotyped roles, and among the top 200 Brazilian films released in the last 10 years none were directed or scripted by a black woman, thus being the most underrepresented part of the population in the cinema and in the media. Their main goal and vision is to change this scenario, woman by woman and movie by movie.
