MASH-UP! 2017

For the fourth time, IFFR and Kunsthal Rotterdam will be putting art and film under the spotlight in a special way at MASH-UP! Click here for MASH-UP! 2018.

On the evening of Friday 3 November, we will be screening the advance première of Golden Palm winner The Square by Ruben Ӧstlund in the Kunsthal. You will then be able to roam the Kunsthal’s exhibition spaces until midnight and admire the work of Belgian surrealist Paul Delvaux. The night will end on the dance floor, where we will be celebrating the Kunsthal’s 25th anniversary.

The Square
Ruben Östlund, 2017, Sweden / Germany / France / Denmark, 142'

Christian is the respected curator of a leading modern art museum in Stockholm. In the hope of enhancing the museum’s reputation, he decides to exhibit The Square: an interactive art installation that invites passers-by to show responsibility within an enclosed space. To promote the installation, he hires an edgy PR agency – but the campaign the agency comes up with gets completely out of control and Christian’s life is mercilessly derailed. As in his previous hit film Turist (IFFR 2015), filmmaker Ӧstlund exposes human failings and investigates the boundaries of freedom of expression and political correctness. A biting satire of the art world featuring a dash of surrealism and harsh humour.

Please note that the subtitles are in Dutch. The movie is spoken in Swedish, Danish and English.

Paul Delvaux. Master of the Dream
After the film, you will receive exclusive nocturnal access to the exhibition Paul Delvaux. Master of the Dream. To mark its 25th anniversary, the Kunsthal is presenting a large retrospective exhibition of the works of one of the most important painters in Belgian art history. Delvaux (1897-1994) is known for his mysterious, dreamy visual language combining elements from various art movements including Expressionism, Surrealism and Symbolism. Themes such as the female body and solitude are central to the mysterious world he creates through his paintings. Delvaux is seen as one of the most important Belgian Surrealists, although he himself did not like the idea of being pigeonholed in this way.

None other than Kriss Berry will perform during the exhibition! Her latest track "Rocket Man" gives you a taste of what's in store:

Cat Love. Nine Lives in the Arts
As a bonus – it’s the 25th anniversary after all – after the film you will also be able to see the exhibition Cat Love. Nine Lives in the Arts, which shows how cats have been portrayed in art since the mid-nineteenth century. You can also get under the skin of your favourite feline during a crash-course in lazing, or take part in the catcall karaoke.

Anniversary party

All of this will be followed by the big MASH-UP! party in the Kunsthal café, where you can dance and celebrate 25 years of the Kunsthal.
