In 1961, a group of potholers from Piemonte head for the wild Italian region of Calabria. Hidden in the Pollino mountains is the Abisso del Bifurto, a cave no one has yet managed to map. In Il buco (‘The Hole’), a contemporary group of potholers recreates its exploration of 50 years ago. Watched by an old shepherd, they slowly descend into the cave. Unlike the shepherd, who knows the area like the back of his hand, they must literally feel their way in the dark. They throw stones and pieces of burning paper down to see and hear how deep the chasm is.

Frammartino (Le quattro volte, 2010) presents their descent without dialogue, and intersperses scenes in the pitch-black Bifurto with stunning landscape shots of Pollino National Park. The breathtaking photography is by Swiss cameraman Renato Berta. Frammartino masterfully restores the wonder of vision. Cinema and the very act of filming become a struggle between light and darkness, a confrontation with the majestic and ancestral nature – the world in its own mystery.
