IFFR KINO: Close-Up by Abbas Kiarostami
Wednesday October 5 is the day: International Film Festival Rotterdam and KINO present the first edition of IFFR KINO, even before the official opening of the new movie theater. From then on you can visit KINO every first Wednesday of the month for an evening dedicated to films selected by IFFR. The monthly evening, with IFFR showed films from the archives and never before screened films in Rotterdam, is framed by special guests, speakers, Q&A calls, and of course something sweet to eat.
We kick off with a special digital restoration of the masterpiece Close-Up (Namay e nazdik, 1990) of the recently deceased Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (1940). In 1997 the film screened at IFFR and is a tribute to Kiarostami, which besides filmmaker was also scriptwriter and illustrator of children's books. This is the opening film of a long series IFFR KINO. Kiarostami paved the way for many Iranian filmmakers after him and, perhaps more importantly, opened up a barrel full of cinematic possibilities. Close-Up, Kiarostami's first masterpiece, was completely digitally restored under his own supervision by the Farabi Cinema Foundation in Iran.
Close-Up was screened at IFFR 1997 as part of the thematic program FAKE, which was marked by the then emerging hybrid genre "docu-fiction". Close-Up created a new cinematic language by mixing different genres. The film is a brilliant construction of real events, because the people who were actually involved acted it out.
IFFR is proud to exhibit the beautiful digital restoration of Close-Up in the place where the festival ever began. Are you there too? Buy your tickets here, we prepare the champagne for you.
The programme starts at 19:00 at KINO, Gouvernestraat 129-133 in Rotterdam. Reservations for Cineville must be picked up before September 28 at KINO. After September 28 the reservations expire. Reservations can be made by mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) or by calling 010 268 11 60.
