Can you name one Nashville country musician who is openly gay? Exactly. Although their working environment is extremely conservative, some of the most prominent songwriters in the scene are gay women. Kye Fleming has written a string of number-one hits and is in the National Songwriting Hall of Fame. This film is the first time she’s ever put herself out there.

Beyond its aversion to anything queer, the country music industry is also painfully misogynistic. To have a career, you need radio airplay. In country music, that is controlled by just three powerful corporations, and this film illustrates how on-air personalities – always men – inflict verbal abuse and sexual harassment on women musicians in their shows.

A brave film that documents how, for decades on end, gay women in country music have accepted staying behind the scenes, as a step in the footlights for a solo career would equal professional suicide.
