No coração do mundo is a great example of the kind of daring cinema represented in IFFR’s Tiger Competition. Fascinating characters inhabit the poor district of Contagem where filmmakers Gabriel Martins and Maurelio Martins (not related) also grew up. This filmis their declaration of love for this district and its inhabitants: a surprisingly filmed mosaic story about people who continue to work for a better life – against their better judgement. After its period on MUBI, No coração do mundo will be available on IFFR Unleashed.

MUBI is also showing three gems from IFFR 2018’s selection. Hanagatami by Japanese filmmaker Obayashi Nobuhiko is a stylised anti-war period drama set on the eve of World War Two and captures an historical moment of frenzy. The director follows a group of teenagers caught up in the chaos of impending war.

La película infinita by filmmaker Leandro Listorti is based on the remains of never-completed Argentine features from the archives of the film museum in Buenos Aires. The film is, as it were, a parallel film history: an essay like a cinematographic Frankenstein, that blows new life into images that once seemed unsuccessful and pointless.

Les Unwanted de Europa by Fabrizio Ferraro is also available to watch on MUBI. In this film, the rocky landscapes of the smuggling route from France into Spain form an imposing backdrop to the last days of Jewish cultural philosopher Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). From his experiences and ideas, Ferraro has created a superb cinematographic lesson of acute contemporary relevance, shot in enchanting black-and-white.
