Videoland Academy: Third edition

29 January 2022

Seven promising 'Dutch horror' applications have been selected for the next phase of the mid-length film development programme, which is now entering its third edition. Eventually, three projects will be made and will premiere at a Dutch film festival and on the streaming platform.

Videoland, the second largest streaming platform in the Netherlands, connects beginner screenwriting talents, a wide at-home audience, and the three largest national film festivals – IFFR, IDFA, and NFF – with its talent development programme: Videoland Academy. The first three results of the programme premiered in September at the Nederlands Film Festival: De Sterfshow, Indringer and Verdwenen Dagen, three fiction movies within the sci-fi genre. The true crime documentary series Snowman is currently still in its editing phase. At this moment, the finishing touches are being put on the three fiction films from the second edition within the theme ‘modern fantasy’. The documentary series from the second edition, Lachgaskoning Deniz: de afterparty, can be streamed on Videoland from the beginning of February.

Mylène Verdurmen, the new head of drama at Videoland since this November: “Videoland Academy wants to secure talent and give them a jumping-off point. The motto is: we're gonna rock this planet. We do this by showing guts, avoiding clichés, and facing risks head on. Videoland Academy is different from other similar talent development programmes as it focuses not on short films, but on productions of 45 minutes and particularly on writers and script development. The science behind a guaranteed platform and audience is, of course, also helpful. We see this initiative furthermore as an investment: we hope that we as Academy-makers can give space to our talents in one of our writers’ rooms. After that, we can really get going.”

Out of all the film projects that were submitted for edition three, seven projects have been chosen to be further developed with the guidance and support from film experts. Eventually, three projects will get the green light to be produced. The seven selected projects are:

  • Aftercult by Zainab Goelaman
  • Cocon by Niels Bourgonje & Britt Snel
  • Dorst by Dajo Leunge
  • De laatste palingvisser by Hanna van Niekerk & Lauren Mae Murphy
  • Fuck Marry Kill by Rasheida Adrianus
  • 't Oord by Sam Dijkstra & Jessie Tiemeijer
  • Pocongdorie by Ivan Hidayat & Jasper ten Hoor

Verdument states: “It’s nice to see how Videoland Academy resonates with makers. We were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm for the assigned theme of ‘Dutch horror’. ‘Finally!’, we hear a lot. Our assignment to these seven teams rings: surpass yourself, surprise us with an authentic point of view, and show more guts than you thought you had. Then you will really make something special. This is also what we at Videoland believe in. In size, we are the second biggest streamer in the Netherlands and we want it to stay that way by investing and by not playing it safe.”
