Rotterdam backed films awarded in Toronto and Venice

Toronto and Venice juries award Rotterdam backed films

'Encarnacion' by Anahi Erneri (Argentina, 2007)

The 2007 Toronto IFF's Artistic Innovation Award was given to Anahi Berneri's ENCARNACION, a CineMart Project in 2006.
Venice's Orizzonti Jury gave a special mention to DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS by Lav Diaz, a film supported by the IFFR's Hubert Bals Fund.
The 2007 Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals screen a total of fifteen feature films originating from Rotterdam’s co-production market CineMart, or backed by its Hubert Bals Fund (HBF).

The Venice line up included two films supported by the IFFR. HELP ME EROS by Lee Kang-sheng (Taiwan) has been selected in the Venezia 64 Competition. In its first stages of development, the film was selected for presentation during CineMart 2003. In 2004, Lee Kang-sheng’s début feature THE MISSING won a Rotterdam Tiger Award as well as the KNF Award from the Circle of Dutch Film Critics.

Philippino filmmaker Lav Diaz presents his new work DEATH IN THE LAND OF ENCANTOS in Venice and Toronto. The Hubert Bals supported film, shot shortly after typhoon Durian hit the country in November 2006, will be screened during the upcoming Rotterdam festival edition.

ENCARNACIÓN (EMBODIMENT) by Anahí Berneri (Argentina) tell the story of  aging B-list actress Erni (Sylvia Perez) who decides to return to her hometown and face her family who knew her as 'Encarnacion', the girl who fled to the city to sell her body in salacious B-films. As a project it was selected for CineMart 2006. The Toronto ‘Special Presentations’ section includes Golden Palm winner and Hubert Bals Fund supported 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS by Cristian Mungiu (Romania) and John Sayles’ HONEYDRIPPER - CineMart Project in 2005 - starring Danny Glover and Stacy Keach.

I AM FROM TITOV VELES by Teona Strugar Mitevska (Macedonia), awarded in Sarajevo with the Special Jury Prize, will be screened in Toronto and, next January, in Rotterdam. The film was selected for CineMart 2005 and this Spring received financial support for post production from the Hubert Bals Fund. Her début feature film HOW I KILLED A SAINT was selected for the Rotterdam Tiger Awards Competition in 2004.
MUTUM, Sandra Kogut’s first fiction feature based on the Brazilian novel ‘Campo geral’ by João Guimarães Rosa received a script development grant from the Hubert Bals Fund. The film premiered during the past Cannes Quinzaine and now screens in Toronto.

An international role model for other funding bodies, the Hubert Bals Fund of the International Film Festival Rotterdam continues to play a crucial role in supporting film-makers and film industries in developing or southern countries. The fund’s grants (for script development, post production or distribution in the country of origin) act as seal of approval, making it easier to attract additional co-producers and financiers.

Rotterdam’s CineMart remains the largest co-production market where a selection of independent film-makers and producers launch their ideas and projects to the international film industry. CineMart was the first of its kind and has since its inception served as example for other co-production markets worldwide, including Pusan, Mannheim, Berlin and more recently Rome. The entry deadline for CineMart 2008 is October 1, 2007.

The dates of the 37th International Film Festival Rotterdam are January 23 – February 3, 2008. The 25th CineMart takes place January 27-31, 2008.
